In a new interview, Trump expressed frustration with Putin and threatened secondary sanctions on Russian oil. It has always been clear that if Trump is going to get any sort of deal worth having, he’ll have to pressure Russia, not just Ukraine. Maybe this is the start of that turn. Regardless, his threat shows that the talk of Trump “switching sides” in the war was premature and exaggerated, even if his approach is a marked break with what came before and has obvious pitfalls.
