Trump Must Remember Why He Was Elected

The GOP panics as midterms loom and Trump’s approval ratings plummet. On yesterday’s episode of The Editors, Rich asks Charlie what advice he would give President Trump if asked to visit the Oval Office.

“I’d tell him what I’ve told you over and over on this show,” responds Charlie, “which is that he has forgotten, if he ever knew, why he was elected. He was elected primarily because people are unhappy with inflation, and they do not like the prices within the economy.

“Anything that the president can do to bring down prices, he should have done. And he hasn’t. He almost immediately instituted — I think illegally — a whole raft of tariffs, and his Iran foray, while defensible on its own terms, has pushed up gas prices,” says Charlie. “And while those things have happened, he has been obsessing over ballrooms and autopens. This is a lethal combination.”

“So I would say that what he should do now . . . is to talk about very little else but the economy.”
