Before Katrina Pierson became Donald Trump’s national spokeswoman in November, she was spokeswoman for the Tea Party Leadership Fund.
As our former colleague Betsy Woodruff remembered, in October, Pierson was sending out e-mails urging people to donate to the group so they could help make Rep. Trey Gowdy the next Speaker of the House.
The e-mails not only ignored the fact that Gowdy repeatedly insisted he didn’t want to be Speaker of the House; they didn’t give any sense of how donating to the group would help make Gowdy the next Speaker. (It’s not like candidates for speaker need to run television ads.) What’s more, the messages made it sound like the Gowdy-for-Speaker was on the verge of success.

Ultimately, the group gave $2,000 to Gowdy. The Tea Party Leadership Fund took in $598,687 last year.
Gowdy is endorsing Rubio, and Trump sent out four retweets Sunday night, criticizing Gowdy and calling him a “loser.”
Perhaps this is what campaigns require in politics in 2015, an ability to emphatically insist that something that isn’t happening is actually happening, in the face of all evidence.
