‘The Truth about Separating Kids’

I wrote a piece on the home page relating some of the details of what’s happening on the border. I only scratched the surface of the legal complications of simply trying to return home people who show up here illegally from Central America as family units. A couple of court decisions and a well-intentioned law have blown a hole in our border enforcement and enabled an ongoing migrant crisis involving children. Absent (relatively easy) congressional action to fix it, the administration has a choice between continuing catch-and-release — which encourages more kids and family units to come — or pursing a policy that unavoidably involves holding the parents and releasing their children.
