The Corner

Two Cents

Well, some of us tend to put in more than two cents. Go crazy with a nickel or something. To read my debate Impromptus, go here. The items are numerous. But the items are very short, most of them. Almost tweety.

If you simply can’t get enough of debate commentary, see what you think. In writing music reviews, I sometimes say, “That’s not the way I would have done it. But So-and-so was onstage, and he had a right to do it his way. Moreover, his way was justifiable.” It can be like this in the realm of debates, too.

P.S. Wanda Landowska famously quipped, “You play Bach your way, I’ll play Bach his way.” Very nice. A performer ought to serve a composer, no doubt — a composer more than his own ego. But the Landowska remark still contains a conceit: a conceit of knowing.
