In addition to the other “Upsides, Down the Ballot” that the editors have flagged, I’d like to mention two others — where, in particular, voters can send the message that Americans need to know English. In Oregon, a ballot initiative (Measure 58) would advance English immersion — over the failed “bilingual education” approach to learning English — in public schools there. And a Missouri ballot initiative (Constitutional Amendment 1) would make English the state’s official language in all government meetings in that state. Like Ward Connerly’s antipreference initiatives in Colorado and Nebraska, the Oregon and Missouri initiatives are essential for the principle of E pluribus unum.
