A handful of Ukrainian deputies took to blows in the country’s parliamentary chamber amid tense debate over the ongoing national crisis and growing threats from Russia.
Reuters reports that the scuffle erupted after Petro Symonenko, a member of the Communist Party, accused nationalists in parliament of creating a chaotic environment advantageous to Russia during mass protests against former President Viktor Yanukovich. Symonenko, who backed Yanukovich, said pro-Ukraine protesters set the precedent that allowed armed pro-Russian vigilantes to overtake government buildings.
Symoneko’s comments went too far for some members, prompting the brawl of more than a dozen people, including women. The fight eventually dissipated, with no major injuries beyond some scratches reported.
