A United Europe? Things Get Interestinger and Interestinger

The foundation on which every effort to build a United States of Europe has rested for the last four decades has been Franco-German cooperation. De Gaulle and Adenauer. Pompidou and Schmidt. Mitterand and Kohl. Now, however, cracks have begun to appear.

From a German reader of this happy Corner–K-Lo’s empire knows no bounds–this acute observation:

What direction will Europe now turn? If France rejects the

constitution because of resentments of “neo-liberalism”, NATO and the

like, while at the same time Germany could be ruled by conservatives and

liberals after the recently-announced elections this fall, this could

turn out to be quite interesting.
