The Unmaking of a Gala

Mayor Bloomberg may skip Rangel’s birthday bash at the Plaza:

Mayor Bloomberg suggested yesterday that Rep. Charles Rangel’s gala 80th birthday party and fund-raiser — long planned for Aug. 11 at The Plaza hotel — may not be happening in light of the Harlem Democrat’s ethical problems.

“I don’t know whether Charlie Rangel is going to have a fund-raiser,” Bloomberg, who’s on the list of invitees, said in a surprising response when asked if he’d be attending the glittery event.

“I don’t know what the facts are. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

“I had planned to go,” conceded the mayor.

“But until we see what comes out of this, I guess by Thursday, I don’t know what’s going to happen. I can tell you this: Charlie Rangel did a lot for New York City and we shouldn’t forget.”
