Upstate Update

The court case over the Tedisco-Murphy election in New York’s 20th District is over when to count domestic absentee ballots. Murphy’s side wants them counted now, whereas Tedisco would like them to be counted after the deadline for overseas and military ballots to come in, which is April 13.

There remains some uncertainty about the precise vote count. On Friday afternoon, the New York State Board of Elections declared an exact tie in their unofficial count of the Election Day tally. The Albany Times-Union posted different numbers from the counties just hours later. As recanvassing continues, we should get a new unofficial-official total soon.

Meanwhile, Tedisco resigned Friday as Assembly Minority Leader amid a push by Republicans to replace him.

And finally, the ghost of NY-20 past:

John E. Sweeney, a Republican who represented the 20th Congressional District from 1999 to 2006, was pulled over for speeding by Clifton Park police on Route 9 at about 3:30 a.m, according to a press release. After a preliminary investigation, Sweeney was taken into custody and processed for felony DWI at the Clifton Park police station, according to New York State Police.
