The Libyan government has notified the United States that an American consular official was killed at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, a U.S. State Department official told CNN Tuesday.
The State Department does not have independent confirmation of the death of an American, the official said.
Earlier Tuesday, a group of militants attacked the consulate, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
