Years ago, I noticed something about journalism. When reporters wanted to tell you that a congressman was black, they did not say he was black. They said he was “a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.” Today, I read an article about that Whole Foods controversy. You know, that guy who lied about receiving a cake with an anti-gay message on it? The company said that the person who decorated the cake was “a member of the LGBT community.” I also read today an article that used that hoary phrase “a member of the Jewish community.”
Thank goodness for communities, I guess. Without them, no one would be able to write or speak.
