Republicans can’t fix the budget right now, but they can stop two key aspects of Biden’s ruinous program in their tracks.
Everyone should take to heart Rich’s important column, casting President Biden as “the Brezhnev of DEI” after issuance of his executive order on “Embedding Equity into Government-wide Processes.” As he points out “it has to be a priority of every Republican running for president to begin tearing up this ideological infrastructure root and branch on Day One”; and “the GOP will have to be committed to fighting it, to the extent possible, in all realms.”
My pile-on to that is that we have neither time nor any excuse to wait. So let’s use the looming debt-ceiling fight.
With a thin margin in the House, Republicans do not have the political heft to use the debt-limit battle to force sea-changes in the budget. Sadly, moreover, even if the heft were there, the political will is not, because a groundswell of Republicans has become as irresponsible as Democrats in pretending we can afford to make so-called entitlements untouchable.
So we need to identify winnable, unifying fights that put Democrats on their backfoot and induce the woke Left to flash its fangs for all the country to see. Anti-Woke is a 2-to-1 position, and the numbers will swing more to our favor as people come to grasp that equity is the antithesis of equality. As I argued over the weekend (here and here), border security, too, is a one-sided political issue.
Ergo: Use the debt ceiling fight to defund Biden’s equity decree and lawless parole for illegal aliens.
Relatively speaking, there isn’t much saving in such measures — they would not make much of a dent in national debt that is already soaring at $31 trillion and headed rapidly to $50 trillion. But every cent counts — countries whose economies are imploding don’t have the luxury of saying this or that modest saving is negligible. More significantly, a sizable majority of the country is deeply opposed to the destruction of America, so it will appear reasonable to demand that unpopular measures be defunded as a cost for raising the debt ceiling — which itself will be unpopular, though unavoidable.
For a change, how about we unite around a few achievable things that would be great for the country and great for setting the terms of the 2024 campaign? If Congress explicitly cuts the executive branch’s funding for promotion of Woke Bolshevism and “catch-and-release,” these key aspects of the ruinous Biden program would be stopped in their tracks.
