From V Than

Than a reader:

“And his psychology is very different than Clinton’s.”

Jonah, you really must stop writing “different than.” “FROM” is used for distinctions in kind – different from, separate from, apart from, &c; “than” is used for distinctions in degree – more than, colder than, greener than, &c. Don’t you dare hurl back the “commonly accepted general standard usage” nonsense; we expect conservatives to provide a bulwark against such rootless relativism, and to do so by example through adherence to what is correct, which in this case is “different from.” (And at Mr. Buckley’s magazine, no less.)

“The correct and honorable use of words is the first and natural credential of civilized status.”

– Paul Johnson, “Enemies of Society,” 1977
