V Is for Victory

Today’s NRO podcast is with John David Lewis, author of Nothing Less than Victory: Decisive Wars and the Lessons of History. On the first page, Lewis writes: “U.S. military doctrine since World War II has progressively devalued victory as an object of war.” So that’s my first question: Really? We also discuss the nature of victory, whether true victory requires extraordinary violence such as the dropping of the bomb on Japan, and what ancient wars can teach us about 21st century conflicts. Also, the cover of the book contains a pleasant surprise. At least it did for me. More on it here.

John J. Miller, the national correspondent for National Review and host of its Great Books podcast, is the director of the Dow Journalism Program at Hillsdale College. He is the author of A Gift of Freedom: How the John M. Olin Foundation Changed America.
