Vince Vaughn — star of such classics as Dodgeball, Anchorman, and Wedding Crashers — called into “The Adam Carolla Show” last Friday and offered an articulate account of why he is conservative. Describing himself as a Ron Paul type, Vaughn told Carolla:
I think that what you come, as you get older, you just get less trust in the government running anything. And that you start to realize when you really go back and look at the Constitution and the principles of liberty, the real purpose of government is to protect the individual’s right to, you know, sort of think and pursue what they have interest in. And that when you start drawing the lines of saying, as a society, we think this is inappropriate, we’re going to pass laws to protect them from themselves and or take things away to protect themselves or move money from here to there, that you realize that you wake up with corruption and without the unintended consequences you’ll wake up with a lot of problems that didn’t exist prior.
Vaughn also said that he is conservative at least in part because of his independent, self-sufficient, working-class parents. When Carolla asked Vaughn if he runs into any problems as a conservative working in Hollywood, Vaughn said that, though he often encouters an initial bias to his conservative stances, as he articulates his positions more people generally understand where he’s coming from. “I think that the point of view . . . that can you elect officials to use force in certain areas to make things go great,” Vaughn said, “. . . I think that starts to become a harder thing to reference where that’s working.”
