Visuals

Among other things, one point I made in my Catholic education piece yesterday based on the pope’s Thursday remarks to educators was that the Catholic University of America has seen some fundamental and necessary changes over the last decade. Today, I was briefly on campus and saw a good visual. A few years ago, I recall complaining to friends about banners around campus that proclaimed “Do it all.” Huh? How’s that for moral guidance. Today what I saw, besides banners welcoming the pope, naturally, this:

Reason. Faith. Service.

That’s more like it. If you’re going to be “a rock in a raging sea” (as President Bush described the Catholic Church this week), you’ve got to help young people figure out what tools they need to be a part of that cultural lifesaver.
