The Corner

Voice of Despair

Virginia governor Bob McDonnell, in the Republican response to the SOTU:

“A child’s educational opportunity should be determined by her intellect and work ethic . . .”

That is precisely the formula used to define “merit” in Michael Young’s 1958 book The Rise of the Meritocracy.

Merit = IQ + Effort

The narrator of that book is (we learn at the end) lynched by a low-IQ mob.

The deep issues of modern society not only have not been solved, they haven’t even been addressed. After 52 years.

We are governed by idiots. Our public discourse is empty babble. We are doomed, doomed.
