A Vote for Cornhuskers

Avoiding work, I’ve been surfing the Net — do we still say that, or is it old-school? — and read about this monumental, instantly infamous exchange between Rick Sanchez and Pete Dominick. Go here. The big news is what Sanchez said about Jews and all. Yadda yadda yadda. But I am interested, for the moment, in something Dominick said:

Sanchez: “I can’t see somebody not getting a job somewhere because they’re Jewish.”

Dominick: “Well, then you’ve never been to Nebraska.”

Um, I have the feeling that it’s Dominick who’s never been to Nebraska.

P.S. I’d bet you anything that the average Nebraska town is more philo-Semitic than the average Ivy League political-science department — not to mention the average Ivy League Middle Eastern Studies department.

P.P.S. In a post earlier this week, I mentioned that Wisconsin was probably our most “German” state. (This came up because I was listing various Berlins in America — towns called Berlin.) A reader wrote, “Isn’t it interesting that, for some time now, our two U.S. senators from here in Wisconsin have been Jewish?” Yeah, it sort of is.

P.P.P.S. If I were Israel, and had to depend on 1) Nebraska, 2) New York, or 3) California to stick by me, in time of peril — I think I’d go with 1).
