As many of you may be aware, the Green New Deal hit some . . . launch snags. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s office posted online, and also distributed to news organizations, FAQ documents that didn’t match the substance of the resolution she had worked on. Among much else, the FAQ touted benefits for those “unwilling to work,” dissed nuclear power, and referred to “farting cows.” And rather than admitting they’d messed up, Camp AOC went on the defensive, claiming the criticisms were aimed at documents that had been “leaked” or “doctored.”
The Washington Post fact-checker has a decent summary of what happened, until the time comes for the bottom line:
There’s a case to be made that the criticism about ending airplanes and cows was a stretch to begin with, since the resolution didn’t mention any of that and the FAQs were not definitive on those points. But Ocasio-Cortez has now disowned the FAQs and the statements that went beyond the resolution. The line about providing for people “unwilling to work” has been walked back completely. So we won’t be awarding any Pinocchios in this kerfuffle.
I trust the same treatment will be forthcoming the next time a Republican first denies, but then “disowns,” something that blows up in his face.
