WATCH: Garth Brooks’s Gracious Response to Being Asked to Perform at the Inauguration

Most celebrities are politically left-leaning so it’s usually a struggle for Republicans to find famous musicians willing to perform on their behalf. That may be amplified this year with the election of Donald Trump, but not everyone is turning him down for political reasons. Garth Brooks was asked to perform and, in a recent Facebook Live video, explained why he wasn’t able to do so. The short answer is that his concert dates got in the way.

His longer response is one many other people, especially celebrities in the spotlight, might want to mimic. Here’s Brooks:

“I’ll tell you what with this whole presidential thing, we’ve got one going out and I pray for him and his family. And for the president going in, I pray for him and his family to guide this nation. Let’s stay together – love, unity, that’s what it’s all about. In the immortal words of Martin Luther King, the most durable power that we’ve known is love. It will always be that way. . . So again, I can’t thank the Obamas enough for serving this country, and may God hold Trump’s hand in the decisions he makes in the country’s name as well.”

Without a hint of partisanship or snark, Brooks was respectful of both Barack Obama and Donald Trump. If only more people with platforms were more like that.
