Speaking of a lack of self-awareness among big-name editors:
Commenting on the keep-the-Times alive movement, [NYT editor Bill] Keller said: “Saving the New York Times now ranks with saving Darfur as a high-minded cause.”
To be fair, Keller is characterizing how he thinks other people view it, not how he thinks of it. Regardless, there’s still a degree of self-importance here that is illuminating. Shortly before he died and pithy as ever, Richard John Neuhaus summed up my feelings about the NYT rather perfectly:
As to what would happen if the New York Times went under, I have that on a list of things to worry about. It is a very long list.
