In a press conference just moments ago, former congressman Anthony Weiner addressed new allegations that he engaged in further sexually explicit Internet conversations after his resignation from Congress, which was prompted by a scandal over lewd text and picture messages he’d sent to young women. Weiner said, “To some degree, with 49 days left until Primary Day, perhaps I’m surprised that more things didn’t come out sooner.”
Weiner, who is now running for the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City, downplayed the significance of today’s revelations that he had continued his habit through last summer, saying that “in many ways things aren’t much different from the way they were yesterday.”
He told reporters, “This behavior’s behind me,” admitting “there is no question that what I did was wrong.”
Appearing alongside his wife, Huma Abedin, Weiner called himself “pleased and blessed that she has given me a second chance.”
“For the past several months I’ve been asking New Yorkers to also give me a second chance,” he added.
He apologized to the women who received his sexually explicit messages “for any inconvenience or embarrassment they’ve caused.”
Weiner did not dispute sending some of the messages after he resigned from Congress, but did say that some of today’s allegations — which included a woman’s saying he offered to purchase an apartment for them to use in Chicago and to help her secure a job — are untrue.
He insisted that he would continue his campaign, saying of New York voters, “I hope they’ll realize that what happened today does not change things” or “the fundamental reason” why he’s running for office.
