Correction about 16-Year-Old Euthanasia Organ Donor Patient

UPDATE:

Yesterday, I came upon a horrible story of a Belgian 16-year-old whose euthanasia was conjoined with organ harvesting. The story stated that she was not killed and immediately harvested, as is the usual process, but deeply sedated and intubated for 36 hours while her organs were “examined,” before being euthanized. That was highly upsetting and I wrote about it last night.

This morning I pursued the story further and found a recounting with greater details about what happened. The girl’s organs were not examined in the surgical suite as I had thought — leading to my worry that her organs might have been removed before her death — but in an ICU. That surely means testing was done via imaging and etc., not surgically.

I regret that I misconstrued the meaning of “examined,” and have taken this opportunity to immediately correct the record. Truth telling in this subject is crucial, and I never want to mislead my readers.

I apologize for the error.
