I must confess that I don’t understand Megyn Kelly’s takedown of what she implies is anti-Christian bigotry in Hillary Clinton’s inner circle. I think they’re on to something. For those who missed the email exchange between the Center for American Progress’s John Halpin and Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri (Clinton campaign chair John Podesta was copied), it begins with this email, from Halpin:
Ken Auletta’s latest piece on Murdoch in the New Yorker starts off with the aside that both Murdoch and Robert Thompson, managing editor of the WSJ, are raising their kids Catholic. Friggin’ Murdoch baptized his kids in Jordan where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.
Many of the most powerful elements of the conservative movement are all Catholic (many converts) from the SC and think tanks to the media and social groups.
It’s an amazing bastardization of the faith. They must be attracted to the systematic thought and severely backwards gender relations and must be totally unaware of Christian democracy.
Nailed it! Palmieri responded:
I imagine they think it is the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion. Their rich friends wouldn’t understand if they became evangelicals.
Seriously. Rich people hate Evangelicals. Halpin finished:
Excellent point. They can throw around “Thomistic” thought and “subsidiarity” and sound sophisticated because no one knows what the hell they’re talking about.
I have to applaud the stunning insight into the Christian mind. I know my own personal faith journey. From the earliest of days, I wanted to dominate my woman. So I went on a quest, searching ancient texts for the systematic belief system that would allow me to bring my wife to heel. I rejected Islam because I didn’t want the FBI to listen to my phone calls. I rejected some of the ancient pagan faiths because sacrificing chickens is messier than you think. (You try catching them!) But one of the calmer versions of conservative Christianity hit just the right spot. I can have rich friends and an obedient spouse. What’s not to love?
These insights — which are widely shared by their wise and totally non-bigoted friends in government, media, and the academy — demonstrate exactly why the Democratic party justifiably pulled out all the stops to drag Hillary over the primary election finish line. She’s got the best people around her. We want them on that constitutional wall. We need them on that constitutional wall. For they understand the truth about American Christians. We’re bigots first, believers second.
