We’ve Been Dumb for Longer

An e-mail, in defense of the Internet:

Regarding Robinson’s review of Bauerlein, I grew up before the internet, and in the early 1980s kids did NOT sit around reading the “Old Masters”.  We were just as intensely focused on ourselves, our peers, and the present moment as the kids today, though we didn’t have the net or cell phones.  If there has been any “collective dumbing down” since the early 1990s, technology only reflects it, it does not cause it.
