W.H. Petition to Make Congressmen Wear NASCAR-Style Patches to Reveal Backers

A new tongue-in-cheek White House petition proposes that members of Congress be required to wear patches showing who their financial supporters are, similar to the way that NASCAR drivers display their sponsors. The purpose of the petition is to bring more transparency to lawmakers’ motives.

The petition requires members to start displaying the logos of their backers while on the campaign trail; candidates would have to wear them to all public campaign events. Once elected, members would still need to comply with the rule. The petition also pushes for varying sizes for the patches depending on the size of the donation. For example, $1 million contributions translate into 4′ x 8″ patches, while quarter-sized buttons would represent free meals from lobbyists.

In order to get a response from the White House, petitions need to garner 100,000 signatures in 30 days. After one week, the petition has over 22,000 signatures.
