It’s not just Constitution Day today; it’s the 225th anniversary of the signing of the document. Surely the White House home page has some passing reference to this notable date? Silly teabagger! Right up front, the White House recognizes 18th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act, the one-year anniversary of the America Invents Act, and the 65th anniversary of the Air Force. Only when you dig down to Briefing Room, then Presidential Actions, then Proclamations do you finally find the proclamation for Constitution Day. It calls on Americans to “recognize the enduring strength of our Constitution” — what’s left of it, anyway.
And how is it that proclamations are still concluded this way: “IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirteenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.” “Year of our Lord”? Whoa, there, won’t that cause riots?
