What Does “Entirely Contrary” Mean?

From EJ Dionne’s column:

Obama never forgot what Warren did for him and brought the episode up last week in explaining why he had asked the pastor to pray at his inauguration. “A couple of years ago,” Obama recalled, “I was invited to Rick Warren’s church to speak, despite his awareness that I held views that were entirely contrary to his when it came to gay and lesbian rights, when it came to issues like abortion.”

But wait a second. I thought Obama opposed gay marriage? How does that make his views “entirely contrary” to Warren’s? And on abortion, thanks to the Gunga Din like water-carrying of folks like Doug Kmiec, I was led to believe that Obama could be described as “pro-life.”

Also, as EJ notes, Warren is actually more soft-edged and concilliatory on social issues than many other evangelicals.  And yet Obama’s views are still “entirely contrary” to his?

Good to know.

Oh and yes, I understand that Obama is simply doing damage control with his base. But, I do think that when politicians lie about something — or when their base simply assumes they’re lying — those contradictions should be highlighted. When I wrote about the anti-Mormon backlash a few weeks ago over Prop 8, I asked here in the Corner why all these angry lefties and gay activists weren’t mad at Barack Obama and other Democrats for his opposition to gay marriage. The overwhelming answer from emailers was, in effect, “But we know he’s lying for political purposes.” Okay, well, letting him get away with that creates its own problems, doesn’t it?
