What If We Called It ‘Hate Speech’?

Once more unto the breach of “teabagging” and “teabagger”: I return to the issue in Impromptus. And a reader says, “When a public figure uses the word ‘teabaggers’ to refer to tea-party protesters, I would recommend replying, ‘Please don’t use that term. I consider it hate speech.’ Since a lot of folks consider hate speech to be in the eye, or ear, of the beholder, maybe that will cause them to stop and think.” Our reader signs off, “Wishfully thinking” — which is right.
