What I’m Reading

The Old Testament in the Light of the New: The Stages of God’s Plan, by Stephen B. Clark, a self-recommending book from Emmaus Road publishing.

Global Squeeze: The Coming Crisis for First World Nations, by Richard C. Longworth. This is a book from 1998 that eerily predicts what the globalized economy would mean for the American Midwest and for first world nations generally. I came upon it from recommendations by Aaron Renn. Longworth, though a prophet of populism, is still committed to what I think of as the dream of the 1990s.

The National System of Political Economy, by Friedrich List (1841). It’s interesting to read List, his critiques of Adam Smith, and to realize how much he is building on not just Alexander Hamilton but Henry C. Carey, the “American School” of economics. In general, I take his criticisms of others as more durable and trustworthy than some of the theses he advances.
