What’s in a Decoration?

Back in the 2000 campaign, Governor Bush used to say, “You can judge a man by the company he keeps.” He did this when he was at rallies, introducing or acknowledging the people around him. Well, you can judge a president — in a way — by the Medals of Freedom he awards. I wrote a piece on this subject about a year ago (“A Tasty Presidential Perk: Medals of Freedom”). Before leaving office, Bush gave the medal to three of the nerviest, most valuable leaders around: Blair, Howard, and Uribe. Those medals looked good around those necks — and belonged there.
