What’s Schumer Thinking?

The Israeli public has its issues with Netanyahu, but it’s not more dovish than he is on Gaza or even on a “two-state solution.” Senator Schumer surely knows this. It follows that U.S. intervention in Israeli politics is not going to yield a democratic leader who is less committed to destroying Hamas.

So is he instead trying to appease the activists on his party’s left? Maybe, but I’m not sure how that’s supposed to work either. Those activists are, in the main, well aware that their objection goes well beyond Netanyahu. They have shown no sign of being appeased by Biden’s pier, and I doubt they’re going to be appeased by Schumer’s sharp criticism of Netanyahu either.

Maybe he’s just reflecting Democratic panic about Biden’s low poll numbers and his party’s infighting.
