Where’s Jefferson?

Just picking up on Michael Ledeen’s post on the relative availability of Jefferson and Marx in Barnes and Noble. I had exactly the same experience about ten years ago in London; in my case it was the relative availability of Marx and Macaulay. Books by and about Marx were everywhere, but I couldn’t find Macaulay in any of the major London bookshops. Eventually I got the copy of the essays in a second hand book store, and the Penguin edition of Macaulay’s History of England (condensed and introduced by Hugh Trevor-Roper) in Foyles. But the lack of interest in the writer who is arguably Britain’s greatest historian compared to the fascination with the sociologist whose every prediction has been falsified was extraordinary–and extraordinarily depressing.
