Whip Count for Manchin-Toomey Bill Unclear

The fate of the Manchin-Toomey legislation on background checks is unclear, according to several leading Democrats and Republicans.

“It going to be a tough fight to get all the votes we need,” said Democrat Chuck Schumer on ABC’s This Week. “We haven’t whipped it,” added Democrat Dick Durbin (Ill.) on Fox News Sunday. Mike Lee, a Utah Republican, told NBC’s Meet the Press that “it remains to be seen whether it can pass the Senate.”

Senator Jeff Sessions, Republican of Alabama, was more blunt. “I don’t think it’s going to pass,” he said on This Week.

Robert Costa was formerly the Washington editor for National Review.
