In another breach of “protocol” reminiscent of last year’s meeting, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal eschewed the traditionally nonpartisan nature of the White House’s National Governor’s Association meeting to claim President Obama “has disqualified himself” as commander-in-chief of America’s armed forces.
The Republican governor earned the ire of the mainstream press last year after criticizing the president’s economic policies “in the shadow of the West Wing.” But at a post-meeting press conference on Monday with his fellow governors, Jindal made it clear that no setting was off-limits for an examination of President Obama’s leadership.
“There are many of us that are very concerned about the president’s unwillingness to call out radical Islamic terrorism and the threat that we face as a country,” he said, after a reporter asked him about Rudy Giuliani’s claim that President Obama “doesn’t love America.”
“I wrote an op-ed today, saying that I think the president has really disqualified himself to be our commander-in-chief,” Jindal continued. “Because he will not only identify the threat, but [will not] take the steps necessary to defeat this threat.”
The governor, who is considering a White House run in 2016, said it was important to remove the ban on American ground troops to combat Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria and to rescind a three-year timeline on defeating the fundamentalist Islamists. Yet the Obama administration, in his view, was more focused on “jobs for terrorists.”
“It’d be better for the president not to warn us about the threats of medieval Christianity . . . rather than actually identifying the threat we faced,” the governor said, adding that while he “wouldn’t have used those words,” Giuliani’s “point was right — there are many of us concerned about this president’s unwillingness to identify and take on directly the threat of radical Islamic terrorism.”
