White House Supports Federalism on Marriage

Although the president repeated his support for gay marriage during the inauguration yesterday, (“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well,”) Jay Carney downplayed the White House’s plans for gay marriage at his press conference this afternoon. According to Carney, despite the president’s pronouncement, the White House has no intention to now join the opposition to California’s Proposition 8, which defined marriage as only between a man and a woman, and he insisted that we should not be “litigating or addressing” marriage at the federal level. If only the administration would apply federalist principles to the rest of its policies, and not use them only when it supports its viewpoints.
