Whither the crusty cranky Granite State primary voter?

I don’t agree with everything in this analysis by David Shribman (The Valley News is a very dreary newspaper and it’s in fact very hard to get a latte north of Concord), but he does raise some interesting questions about primary season in a changing New Hampshire. Nearly half the Granite State electorate are now registered “independents”, which means they can choose which primary to vote in – or, to put it another way, which party’s base to destabilize. Do any of the candidates on stage at the Reagan Library have any great appeal to NH indies? I don’t think so. McCain’s Mister Maverick routine would be hard to pull off a second time, even without the war. So if those electors start heading to the Dem roster that seems likely to be better news for Obama than Hillary.
