WHO VOTED TO IMPEACH HASTINGS? PELOSI, HOYER, CONYERS, RANGEL, FRANK, WAXMAN, DINGELL…

I have a new story on Alcee Hastings up this evening — tomorrow’s story tonight.  Which senior Democratic lawmakers in the House, you might ask, voted to impeach then-federal judge Hastings back in 1988?  The answer: all of them.  Pelosi, Hoyer, Conyers, Rangel, Frank, Waxman, Dingell, Miller, Obey, Skelton, Spratt, Berman, Lantos, Slaughter — all are in line to chair committees in the House, and all voted to impeach Hastings, who might be a fellow chairman if Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi puts him in charge of the Intelligence Committee.  Plenty of other Democrats in the House at the time — John Lewis, Barbara Boxer, Charles Schumer, Richard Durbin, Ed Markey, Ron Dellums, Julian Dixon, Richard Gephardt — well, they all voted to impeach Hastings, too.  The story also contains excerpts from John Conyers’ apparently heartfelt speech before the Senate in which Conyers urged the conviction and removal of Hastings. “Justice and the integrity of our government depend on the importance of these impeachment proceedings,” Conyers told the Senate, “and they argue that the judge should be removed from the bench.”
