Why Virginia Democrats Aren’t Quite So Mad at Mark Herring

Virginia lawmakers are just covering themselves in glory these days.

Here’s Congressman Don Beyer, a Democrat, explaining why there may be some hesitation about forcing out attorney general Mark Herring, who wore blackface in college:

There are cynics who say this is about the next election. I think it’s more about values. We would move from a progressive, very strong attorney general to someone who’s not just a Republican but someone who’s on the arch-conservative end of it, so the way our laws would be administrated would be completely different.

He’s referring to Speaker of the House Kirk Cox. The implication is that if the replacement to Herring was more in line with Beyer’s political beliefs, he would support removing Herring from his office.
