Despite the president’s increasingly dismissive tone on the targeting by the IRS, “which amazingly seem to affect primarily the president’s critics,” George Will believes the matter continues to be wrongly regarded as a minor affair.
“We’ve had three major scandals in the last 40 years,” he said on Monday’s Special Report. “Scandals are a dime a dozen in this town — sexual, financial, and all the rest — three big ones involving the distortion and abuse of institutions: Watergate, Iran-Contra, and the IRS.”
“The first two were ravenously covered by the media, they were Republican presidents’ problems,” Will continued. “This is not being pursued and the president knows that hence his sense of weariness and boredom as he discussed this with Bill O’Reilly.”
When the scandal first broke, the issue was serious enough to merit condemnation from the White House and prompt former IRS official Lois Lerner to retire and plead the Fifth, he pointed out.
