On Tuesday, the Obama administration announced that, without a bilateral security agreement, all American troops will be removed from Afghanistan by the end of the year.
George Will said on Special Report that the potential removal of U.S. troops is “driven by personal chemistry, in part.” Obama has a bad relationship with Afghanistan’s president, Hamid Karzai, which has impeded the creation of a security agreement.
However, Will thinks threatening a withdrawal in order to force an agreement is premature. “There is an election coming up, I guess April 5, at which time [Obama] will have another interlocutor to like or dislike.,” Will said. “The idea that we have to do this now, we’re making a wager that we really can’t afford to lose. We don’t want [Karzai] to call our bluff.”
