Wisconsin Countdown

Madison, Wis. – As of 10:30 p.m. Central, three Republicans have held on: Sen. Rob Cowles, Sen. Sheila Harsdorf and Sen. Luther Olsen. One Republican, Sen. Dan Kapanke, has lost. That leaves two seats in play: Sen. Alberta Darling and Sen. Randy Hopper. To take the majority, Democrats will need to win both races. Democrat Jessica King, for the moment, leads Hopper by about 2,000 votes with 97 percent of precincts in. Darling is down by about 1,000 votes, with 63 percent of precincts counted, against Democrat Sandy Pasch.

UPDATE: 11:00 p.m. Central:

Sen. Alberta Darling’s seat, as predicted, remains the “crown jewel,” the make-or-break race for Democrats. With 68 percent of precincts reporting, Democrat Sandy Pasch leads Darling by 1,000 votes, 51 percent to 49 percent. Hopper, for his part, has lost: King has been declared the victor, winning by about 1,200 votes with all precincts reporting, 51 percent to 49 percent.

UPDATE: 11:12 p.m. Central:

Here comes Darling: The 67-year-old Republican from the Milwaukee suburbs suddenly finds herself in the lead, 52 percent to 48 percent, with 79 percent of precincts reporting. The results from Waukesha County were a major, last-minute boost.

UPDATE: 12:30 a.m. Central:

Democrat Sandy Pasch has conceded. Republicans have (barely) held onto their majority.

Republican winners: Darling, Olsen, Cowles and Harsdorf

Democrat winners: King, Shilling
