Looks Like America

Bill Clinton famously said that he wanted to have a Cabinet that “looks more like America.” It was — and is — a fatuous sentiment. Bill Clinton’s America apparently had an awful lot of lawyers and multimillionaires in it.

That being said, I quite like this New York Times photo essay on the women of the 116th Congress. I’m not 100 percent sold on that slate-blue Olan Mills backdrop, but the photographs themselves are interesting and, I think, do look like America. I particularly like the juxtaposition of Representative Yvette Clarke (D., N.Y.) with the official portrait of Dwight Eisenhower. I suspect he would have liked it, too.

The photo of Representative Elise Stefanik reminds me: When the youngest woman ever elected to Congress was a Republican, it wasn’t quite as big a deal, was it?
