Women Trouble

In the front-page space reserved for “Bad News for Republicans” stories, this morning Washington Post reports that the GOP is losing “Security Moms.”  The article defines these voters as married women with children whose concerns about security gave the GOP a boost in 2002 and 2004, as though but for 9/11 they would have been in the Democrats’ camp. The analysis adopts the false premise that women voters’ default position is pro-Democrat unless the GOP scares them to death.  John Kerry lost married woman without college degrees by 16 points and white women by 11 points, but Democratic candidates have had similar women trouble for over 20 years.  As I point out in you know what:  ”Since 1980, Democratic presidential candidates have won an average of 46 percent of the white women, two-party vote while Repubicans have won an average of 54 percent in those seven national races.”  And security issues weren’t at the top of women voters’ concerns in 2004.  “Moral values” topped the agenda of voters, cited by 43 percent of men and 57 percent of women.  It would be bad news for Republicans if married women with kids abandoned them in November, not because they are the security-obsessed “critical group of swing voters” as the Washington Post asserts, but because they can generally be counted on to back the GOP.
