Woodward on Obama’s Handling of Sequester: ‘Kind of Madness That I Haven’t Seen in a Long Time’

The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward described the White House’s handling of the sequester as “a kind of madness that I haven’t seen in a long time” on Morning Joe this morning. Woodward was critical of the president’s warning that we would not be able to deploy an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf because of the budget cuts. “Under the Constitution, the president is commander-in-chief and employs the force,” he said, “and so we now have the president going out because of this piece of paper and this agreement, ‘I can’t do what I need to do to protect the country.’ That’s a kind of madness that I haven’t seen in a long time.”

It would have been unimaginable, Woodward continued, for past presidents, such as Ronald Reagan or Bill Clinton, to have put themselves in a position that risked national security and defense because of a budget agreement similar to the sequester.
