A Word from the Imam

I wonder whether my colleagues are getting mail like this: “Have you ever said an unkind word about Wahhabi imams? Have you ever linked their venomous rhetoric to acts of terrorism? . . . Well, Mr Nordlinger, for terrorist attack in Tuscan, you ARE the imam.” Now, the New York Times doesn’t write like this correspondent, and the CNN people don’t talk that way. But the underlying point, or charge, is the same.

In all honesty, I don’t see what the Tucson massacre has to do with Republicans and Democrats, with Sarah Palin or me. I really don’t. How did this get to be about Sarah Palin? Because everything in America is about Sarah Palin, for those with Palin on the brain? The killer was apparently a loon whose psychotic flights led him to a murder spree. And because the congressman who was the main target has a “D.” after her name, instead of an “R.,” people like me are getting mail like the letter quoted above. Two seconds ago, the Left was hot against Congressman Giffords, because she is an immigration hawk and voted against Nancy Pelosi. (Headline in Daily Kos: “My CongressWOMAN voted against Nancy Pelosi! And is now DEAD to me!”) And now Sarah Palin is supposed to have killed her, or tried to?

What a sick country, with a sick political culture, in many ways. (For more on this matter — more from me, that is — see a post from last night.)

Men Literally Died for That Flag, You Idiots

The symbol itself is under attack, as we’ve seen with Nike dumping a shoe design featuring an early American flag, Megan Rapinoe defending her national-anthem protests (she says she will never sing the song again), and ... He Just Can’t Help Himself

By Saturday, the long-simmering fight between Nancy Pelosi and her allies on one side and the “squad” associated with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the other had risen to an angrier and more destructive level at the Netroots Nation conference. Representative Ayanna Pressley, an African-American Massachusetts ... Read More

On Gratitude and Immigration

Like both Rich and David, I consider it flatly inappropriate for the president of the United States to be telling Americans -- rhetorically or otherwise -- to “go back where you came from.” In consequence, you will find no defense of the president from me, either. What Trump tweeted over the weekend was ... Read More

The ‘Squad’ Gives a Gift to Donald Trump

On Sunday, Donald Trump gave the Democrats a gift -- comments that indicate he thinks native-born congresswomen he detests should “go back” to the countries of their ancestors. On Monday, the four congresswomen handed Trump a gift in return, managing to respond to the president’s insults in some of the most ... Read More
