That liberal line post below elicited a stunning array of really nasty email, next to none of it substantive. If it makes people feel more comfortable, call it “the Kennedy line” since I believe Ted Kennedy holds all of those positions at once. Though I hardly think it’s wildly unfair to call the Kennedy position the “liberal” position, even if many liberals surely have different views. To give you a sense of the intellectual tenor of what I’m talking about, here’s one of the more high-minded and substantive emails I received:

can’t go around nation-building, except in Iraq and Afgahnistan, where we
need to. We don’t need a September 11 commission, but now we do. Same-sex
marriage will destroy marriage, but I’ll just talk about it before elections
and never do anything about it after them. And Clinton was bad for not doing
anything about high gas prices, but I won’t.
