Boy, that’s one shocking memo, Jonah — shocking in that anybody actually wrote a memo about something that was a matter of public record as it was going on. Basically, when Bush went to the U.N. on September 12, 2002 to talk about Iraq, he called on the U.N. to demonstrate it was “relevant” by agreeing to remove Saddam from power. It was understood by all and sundry that Bush intended to go to war no matter what the U.N. decided. When Tom Daschle, then the Senate majority leader, said he wanted to wait for the U.N. to act before the Senate would take up the question, Bush said he was surprised to hear that the Senate would surrender control of the American national interest to the United Nations. That happened on September 13. Wonder what he meant by that?
