Yearning For Freedom

I posted a day or two ago about the President’s apparent belief that human beings everywhere yearn for freedom. I expressed skepticism, based on my own experience of living among unfree people. This brought in several emails, every one of them agreeing with me. Sample:

“Mr. Derbyshire—I lived in the Soviet Union for 25 years (well, technically the last 3 months it was already Russia), and my observations are the same as yours. Not many people there really wanted freedom and those who did (of those that I knew) mostly don’t live there anymore (myself included). Furthermore, it appears that most Russians don’t even understand the concept of freedom…”
